Goldenseal , Nice Herbs

Goldenseal (Hydrastis Canadensis, Yellow Root, Ground Raspberry, Wild Tumeric.) This lovely woodland plant native to the hardwood forests of the US was found originally as far North as Wisconsin and Vermont and as far south as Georgia and Alabama. Some wild stands of Goldenseal still exist in these areas, but due to increased popularity in the herb trade, plants in the wild are now endangered due to over-harvesting and urban sprawl, overtaking habitat.

There are numerous growers around the country who are now cultivating Goldenseal both in woodland settings or in large field production under shade cloth. It is considered essential to the preservation of this plant to use only Goldenseal root that has been cultivated rather than wild Harvested.

As backyard herb growers, Goldenseal is one of the easiest of the woodland herbs to cultivate in a shade garden setting. The lovely green palmate leaves unfurl in early spring and soon the small white flowers appear.

Eventually, each plant produces its red raspberry-like seed which is very striking as the foliage yellows the seed ripens. The plants will spread by their roots and eventually form a crowded mat. The distinctive yellow root is harvested in late Fall after the foliage dies back. Usually plants reach a harvestable size by 4 to 6 years old.

Although Goldenseal is quite drought tolerant once established some watering the first few years especially in dry Summer climates helps the process along. A deep mulch of hardwood leaves or chips is ideal. The plants must be protected from slugs and snails when they first emerge in the spring.

Several Native American tribes used Goldenseal root as an important medicinal. The Iroquois used it for coughs, digestive upset and pneumonia. The Cherokee used Goldenseal for snake bites, as a tonic herb and as a anti-microbial wash for wounds. The early American Pioneers also used Goldenseal as an antiseptic, a digestive and a respiratory herb and by the 1860's, the wild harvested root was in high demand.

Goldenseal has continued to be one of the most popular western herbs for many years and is an integral ingredient in many of the herbal formulas of the 19th and 20th century. The Yellow root is rich in berberine and hydrastine and is one of the best herbal remedies for all issues involving mucous membranes from sinus infections to ear Infections to pink-eye.

Research on lagundi conducted by the Philippine Department of Health has suggested that the plant has a number of practical uses, and the use of lagundi is actively promoted by the government as a result. Outside of the Philippines, preparations of lagundi are sometimes available at stores which supply herbal medicines, or through practitioners of herbal and alternative medicine.

This plant is native to the swamps of the Philippines, where it can sometimes grow quite tall. It has a single thick, woody stem like a trunk, and the leaves appear palmately, in the form of five pointed leaves which splay out like the fingers of a hand. The leaves, root, flowers, and seeds of lagundi all appear to have medicinal values.

The use of five-leaved chaste tree for medicinal purposes has been known for a long time in China, Korea, Japan, Indonesia, Philippines and other Asian countries. Today, pharmaceutical companies in Japan are importing wild vitex negundo from Philippines. The root is reported to be tonic, febrifuge, and expectorant. The root is also used in a great variety of diseases: dyspepsia, colic, rheumatism, worms, boils, and leprosy. The flowers are used in diarrhea, cholera, fever, and diseases of the liver, and are also recommended as a cardiac tonic. The seeds make a cooling medicine for skin diseases and leprosy, and for inflammation of the mouth. The leaves are used as a tea for conditions like coughs and asthma.

Preparations of lagundi have been used for a wide variety of complaints traditionally, although scientific research has concentrated on its use for respiratory complaints. Lagundi is generally accepted in the Philippines to be useful for coughs, asthma symptoms, and other respiratory problems, and the Philippine government actively promotes it as an alternative to Western cough medicines. Some doctors also prescribe lagundi to assist in the treatment of asthma, as regular doses appear to reduce the strength of asthma attacks.

As an analgesic, lagundi also appears to have some efficacy. It has been compared to drugs like aspirin in trials which show that lagundi may be useful in the treatment of things like pain after dental extractions. Some people like to take lagundi before going in for extractions, in an attempt to pre-empt the associated pain and discomfort.

Lagundi is prepared by boiling it, steeping it, and then straining it. At home, people make lagundi teas from the leaves, often producing a large amount and bottling the excess to use later. Commercially, lagundi can be purchased in the form of syrup or capsules to make it easier to handle. It is also blended in with cough medicines and other herbal remedies.

As with other herbal medicines, lagundi should not be taken without consulting a doctor, as it may potentially conflict with other medications or it may be contraindicated for a particular condition. If your doctor is resistant to herbal treatments, you may want to seek out a practitioner who supports complementary medicine so that you can get sound advice about whether or not lagundi is safe for you.

7 Essential Oils to Thicken Hair

Hair, which is regarded as a woman's biggest asset needs a lot of care and tending to. Healthy hair is a reflection of a balanced diet and a healthy lifestyle. Today our hair needs more care and attention since it is exposed to harsh chemicals. Our hair is much like our skin in its acidity level; frequent washing with an alkaline shampoo disturbs the acid balance and can damage healthy hair. It's best to use a mild pH balance shampoo. There are many factors that contributes to hair destruction like:

Environmental factors like sun exposure, wind, toxins and pollutants. Over sun exposure can cause the hair to become brittle, dry and discolored.
Hair colors, streaking, highlights, hair sprays, hair waving and straightening, chemicals in our water.
Heated rollers, curling irons, dryers, hot combs, and hair blowers have damaging effects.
Poor scalp circulation, harsh hair sprays, improper rinsing of shampoos or conditioners, not enough brushing of scalp, harsh chemicals, allergies to hair care products, a deficiency in fat soluble vitamins causes dandruff.

In order to overcome all these factors our hair needs some special care which can be achieved with the help of essential oils. There are 7 essential oils to thicken hair.

Essential oils like chamomile, lavender and ylang ylang can be used individually or as a combination for dry and brittle hair. Massaging the hair with approximately 20 drops of olive oil, jojoba, peachnut and sunflower is also helpful.
Using 3 - 5 drops of lavender, rosemary or geranium in un-perfumed shampoo per washing and massaging the scalp with 20 drops of rosemary, chamomile, geranium, cedarwood or lavender is recommended either individually or in a combination with virgin olive oil for the removal of dandruff.
Adding the essential oil of Bergamont, cedarwood, frankincense, lavender or rosemary in combination or individually to your shampoo will help to reduce the over secretion of sebum thus reducing the oily-ness of hair. Also spray hair daily with rosemary hydrosol.
For chemically or environmentally damaged hair add 2 - 3 drops of rosemary or patchouli to your conditioner after shampooing and leave in hair for 3 - 5 minutes. Add up to 20 drops per 50 ml bottle of olive oil of lavender, rosemary, sandalwood or patchouli to improve luster, finish and strength of hair fibers. These recommended oils could be used in a combination or individually.
For fine hair weekly hair treatment with recommended oils of lavender, rosemary, ylang ylang, patchouli should be taken individually or in combination. 20 drops of essential oil in 50 ml of castor oil or sweet almond oil will also do. After applying these oils wrap the hair in a towel and leave in for approximately one hour.
A blend of six drops each of lavender and bay essential oils in a base of four ounces of either almond, soybean or sesame oil massaged into the scalp and allowed to sit for 20 minutes has been used to stimulate the scalp. Once the mixture is in the scalp for 20 minutes, wash your hair and scalp with your normal shampoo mixed with three drops of bay essential oil. Massaging the scalp in general for a couple of minutes a day can stimulate blood flow to the hair follicles and in mild cases stimulate some hair growth.
Rosemary hydrosol, which is one of the 7 essential oils to thicken hair, helps to condition the hair. It's recommended for all hair types and is a easy, naturally healthy way to improve the shimmer of your hair. Hydrosols are easy to apply. Simply mist the hair daily with the hydrosol and let it do the rest.

How to prepare Ginger Lozenges

Medicated candies prepared from rhizomes of luya, Zingiber officinale, for sore throat, cough and as breath freshener, dissolved in the mouth as needed.


Ginger rhizomes, powdered;
confectioner’s sugar,
gum Arabic powder, USP;
water, mortar and pestle,
wax paper,
aluminum foil

Proportion: 2 tablespoon powdered ginger for every cup of confectioner’s sugar.


1. Mix powdered ginger, confectioner’s sugar, a little gum Arabic powder in a mortar and pestle.

2. Add water, a few drops at a time, enough to form a mass/ball.

3. Line a tray/plate with cornstarch lightly. Transfer the mass/ball to the starch-lined tray.

4. Flatten the mass/ball to desired thickness, or make a long roll.

5. Divide the flattened mass or roll, as the case maybe, into equal portions, as desired.

6. Allow the discs to dry (air-dry or place in an oven briefly); then wrap each one in aluminum foil.

Scientific name: Capsicum frutescens L.

Common names: Pasitis (Tagalog); silit diablo (Ilokano); lada (Bikol); katambal (Bisaya); African chillies, Cayenne., Chile (Sp.); chileng-bundok (Tag.); kasira (Mag.); katumbal (Bis.); kitikot (Bis.); lada (Sul., Bik.); lara (Sul.); paktin (IF.); pasitis (Tag.); rimorimo (Bik.); sili (most dialects); sileng-labuyo (Tag.); siling-palai (Tag.); Spanish pepper, red pepper, cayenne, chile pepper, chillii (Engl.).

Indications and preparations: Liniments from crushed fruits for muscular aches and joint pains.

Sileng-labuyo is ubiquitous in the Philippines. It is a native of tropical America, but is now pantropic.

This pepper plant is erect, branched, half-woody, and 0.8 to 1.5 meters in height. The leaves are oblong-ovate to ovate-lanceolate, 3 to 10 centimeters long, and pointed at the tip. The flowers are solitary or occur several in each axil, and are stalked, pale green or yellowish-green, and 8 to 9 millimeters in diameter. The fruit is commonly red when ripe, oblong-lanceolate, and 1.5 to 2.5 centimeters long. The seeds are numerous and discoid.

The fruit has a very sharp taste and is extensively used as a condiment. It is mixed with or made into pickles, and is a principal ingredient in all curies in India. The leaves are very extensively used as a green vegetable. They have a very pleasant, somewhat piquant flavor. The leaves are excellent sources of calcium, and iron and a good source of phosphorus, vitamin B, and vitamin A.

The fruit contains an active ingredient, capsaicin, 0.14 per cent; and capsaicin, 0.15 - 0.5 per cent; starch, 0.89 - 1.4 per cent; pentosans, 8.57 per cent; and pectin; 2.33 cent. The fruit is official in the Argentine and United States Pharmacopoeias; and also in the British, and Indian Pharmacopoeias.

According to Drury Cayenne, pepper is believed to be wholesome for persons of phlegmatic temperament, being considered stimulating. When eaten fresh, it is an excellent promoter of ligaments in tropical countries. The bruised berries are employed as powerful rubefacients, being preferred to sinapisms in sore throats. They are also given, with the best results, as a gargle. Chilli vinegar (made by pouring hot vinegar upon the fruit) is an excellent stomachic. Chillies are employed, in combination with cinchona, in intermittent and lethargic affections, and also in atonic gout, dyspepsia accompanied with flatulence, tympanitis, and paralysis.

Warm fomentation of both leaves and fruit is applied for rheumatic pains. The leaves of some varieties are used as a dressing for wounds and sores. A strong infusion of the fruit of the hotter kinds is applied as a lotion for ringworm of the scalp.

Chillies are used in native practice in typhus intermittent fevers and dropsy; also in gout, dyspepsia, and cholera. Externally, they are used as a rubefacient and internally, as a stomachic.

Common names: Dilang buwaya, acibar (general); Curacao aloe, aloe.

Indications and preparations: Sap from fresh leaves for alopecia, falling hair, burns, psoriasis, complexion care. Pounded leaves poultice for contusions and localized edema.

Sabila is used for ornamental and medicinal purposes in the Philippines. The stems of sabila grow from 30 to 40 centimeters in height. The leaves are fleshy, mucilaginous, and succulent, 20 to 50 centimeters long, 5 to 8 centimeters wide; gradually narrowed and the base, pale green, and irregular, white-clothed, and the margins having weak prickles. The inflorescence is erect, and usually twice the height of the plant. The flowers are 2 to 3 centimeters long, yellow, with the segments about equal the oblong tube.

The leaves contain barbaloin 25 per cent, isobarbaloin 0.5 per cent, emodin, resin, and traces of volatile oil; in the Sicilian variety, with sicaloiu. It also contains cinnamic acid, d-arakinose and oxydase.

The juice of the fleshy leaves is usually mixed with gogo by the Filipino women to prevent falling of the hair and to cure baldness. The juice from the leaves mixed with wine preserves the hair, according to reports. Also the juice mixed with milk cures dysentery and pains in the kidney. The leaves are used by Filipino herbalist to poultice edema of beriberi patients. The alcoholic tincture of this inspissated juice is used in India and in the Antilles to cure bruises or contusions and ecchymosis.

It was also noted that the infections themselves were confined while using the lemon balm and did not spread as much, and individuals reported that the use of lemon balm topically offered further relief from symptoms such as redness and itching. Lemon balm's antivital properties may be attributed to chemical compounds it contains such as caffeic acid and rosmarinic acid. However, to date, no human studies have been carried out to support the belief that lemon balm is effective against bacterial and fungal activity; however, laboratory studies show that lemon balm has demonstrated some effect against both.

Dosage and Administration

For difficulty sleeping or to reduce stomach complaints, flatulence, or bloating, choose from the following:
Tea, using 1.5 to 4.5 g herb, several times daily
2 to 3 mL tincture three times daily, or the equivalent in fluid extract or encapsulated form
For cold sores or herpes sores, steep 2 to 4 tsp of crushed leaf in 1 cup boiling water for 10 to 15 minutes. Cool. Apply with cotton balls to the sores throughout the day.

For children, lemon balm may be used topically on cold sores. The dosage would be the same as the recommendations for this use in adults. For internal use, adjust the recommended adult dose to account for the child's weight. Most herbal dosages for adults are calculated on the basis of a 150 lb (70 kg) adult. Therefore, if the child weighs 50 lb (20 to 25 kg), the appropriate dose of lemon balm for this child would be 1/3 of the adult dosage.

Kovakkai ,Tindora masala,it easy to do, I had never tasted kovakkai before.I found many of my friends cook this vegetable and when I happen to taste it I liked it too. Once when we went to a friend's house for dinner , she had cooked this curry.It was different with peanuts and I couldn't find out it was kovakkai. I got the recipe from her and whenever I buy this vegetable I cook this way


Kovakkai- 3 cups (cut lengthwise )
Onions- 1 large chopped finely
Green chilli-1 chopped finely
Ginger garlic paste- 2 tsp
Coriander powder- 2 tsp
Chilli powder – 1 tsp or acc to taste
Turmeric powder- ¼ tsp
Cloves- 3 or 4
Salt to taste
Oil- 4 to 5 tsp
Coriander leaves- 2 tsp chopped finely
For seasoning
Mustard seeds- ¼ tsp
Jeera- ¼ tsp
Curry leaves - few
Peanuts- 3 tsp

Heat oil in a pan add the seasoning items. Add the chopped onion and green chilli and fry till the onions become transparent. Then add the ginger garlic paste and fry till the raw smell disappears. Now add the kovakkai pieces and fry for some time. Add the turmeric, coriander and chilli powders. Crush or powder the cloves and add it to the masala. Add little water , simmer the flame and close it with a lid. Cook till the vegetable becomes tender and oil seperates. Garnish with coriander leaves and serve hot with rice.

Vendakkai/Okra Fry :Easy to me : We usually make vendakkai masala or curry . My Mother used to make vendakkai fry sometimes. This recipe is quite different from the usual ones we make and I love to have it with Rice and sambar. Try it folks and I bet you will love this too.


Vendakkai/okra- 300 gms(see to that they are yound and tender)
Onion- 1 sliced thinly
Chilli powder- 1 tsp or acc to taste
Turmeric powder- ¼ tsp
Curry leaves- 1 or 2 sprigs
Salt to taste
Oil for deep frying


Wash and dry the okra in paper towels(make sure it is dried well). Cut into medium rounds.
Heat oil in a pan and deep fry till they are brown. Finally when you are done frying the okra pieces fry the onions till dark brown. Off the stove and fry the curry leaves. Add the fried onions and curryleaves to the fried okra. Add salt, turmeric powder and chilli powder and toss well so that it is well mixed. It can be called as okra chips too.
Serve with rice and Sambar or Tomato rasam.

Damiana Information and Facts

Damiana is a yellow-flowering plant that is frequently found growing in climates that are relatively hot and humid including Central and South America and in a few regions in the United States. The Conventional Medical Treatment for Breast Cancer

Current statistics report that one woman in nine will get breast cancer in her lifetime. This does not mean that a 30-year-old woman is at high risk of developing breast cancer at that point in her life, but rather that she has a one-in-nine chance of developing the condition at some point in her life. In actuality, a woman has a I-in-5900 chance of having breast cancer at age 30, and a risk of 1-in-800 at age 80. Men rarely develop breast cancer.

Heredity plays a large role in determining a woman's risk for breast cancer. People who have three or more close relatives with the condition, and people whose families have breast cancer in more than one generation are at increased risk. People who have relatives with early onset of breast cancer, cancer in both breasts, or ovarian cancer also have an elevated risk of developing breast cancer. Women who have mutations of the BRCAI or BRCA2 genes have up to an 85 percent chance of developing breast cancer by age 70. This genetic mutation occurs most often in Jewish women of Ashkenazi descent.

Yet, heredity is not the only risk factor for developing breast cancer. A high-fat diet, excessive alcohol intake, obesity, giving birth to a child after the age of 30 or not giving birth at all, an early onset of menstruation, and menopause after age 52 are all thought to increase breast cancer risk. Exposure to environmental toxins are another suspected risk factor. On the other hand, some women develop breast cancer without being in any of the high-risk groups.

If you notice even a slight change in one or both breasts, visit your physician immediately, since breast cancer can spread to the lymph nodes and to other parts of the body. Your doctor physically examines your breasts and takes a mammogram, or breast X-ray. If the mammogram reveals a mass of tissue, or is unclear, your physician may recommend an ultrasound test. This diagnostic test uses sound waves to create an image of interior breast tissue. It is used not only to pinpoint the location of a mass, but to help determine whether the mass is cancerous. In many cases, a needle biopsy is required to confirm diagnosis. There are two types of needle biopsies. During fine needle aspiration, a small needle is inserted into the breast lump. If the lump is a cyst and not a tumor, fluid will drain from it when pierced with the needle. If the lump is a tumor, cells are removed for examination. During a core needle biopsy, actual breast tissue cells are removed for examination.

If the tumor is less than 4 centimeters in size, it can be surgically removed with a lumpectomy (removal of the lump), followed by radiation. If the tumor is large, mastectomy (removal of the breast and underlying tissue) is necessary. After mastectomy, the breast can be reconstructed either at the time of surgery or at a later date. During breast cancer surgery, lymph nodes from the underarm are removed and examined for the presence of cancer cells. Women with positive lymph nodes require follow-up chemotherapy or hormone therapy with tamoxifen. There are several treatment options for breast cancer, depending on ,the size of the tumor, lymph node involvement, and whether the tumor cells have positive or negative estrogen receptors. Women should discuss the various options with their physicians.

Hormone therapy is another common method of treating breast cancer. The hormone tamoxifen blocks the effects of estrogen on the breast, which in turns stops the growth of cancerous cells. Unfortunately, tamoxifen has been shown to raise the risk of uterine cancer, so women are screened carefully before being given the drug.

Vitamins - Synthetic vs. Natural

Synthetic or Natural Vitamins - What's The Difference?
Hold the Fritos, and pass the carrots. Most kids today are not eating what they need for proper growth and general health. According to the September '97 Journal of Pediatrics, only 1% of American children aged 2 to 19 eat healthy diets. With a rapidly growing kid's vitamin industry, it is apparent that more and more parents are turning to vitamins to supplement their children's diets. Do we really know how safe these products are? Can they fully replace the nutrients in spinach or apples? Is there a difference between vitamin products on the market?

What Are Vitamins?
Before we can answer these questions, we must know exactly what vitamins are. In Judith DeCava's book, The Real Truth about Vitamins and Antioxidants, she defines a vitamin as "a complex mechanism...of functional, interrelated, interdependent components. A vitamin consists of, not only the organic nutrient(s) identified as the vitamin, but also enzymes, coenzymes, antioxidants and trace element activators." A vitamin complex is not simply an individual chemical or several chemicals. It must contain all factors that make up the vitamin in its entirety. Just like a car is not four tires, nor a wheel, nor an engine, but rather it is a "car" when all parts are complete and working together.

Two Viewpoints
There are two points of view when it comes to supplements. One is that vitamin parts can be synthesized, in high concentrates (high potency). This is the principle followed by most supplement manufacturers, the majority of which are pharmaceutical companies. These vitamins are termed "synthetic". (Though they can be labeled "natural" even if they come from sugar or coal tar).

The other viewpoint is that vitamins and mineral elements are so complex, and have so many parts that are dependent upon each other, that when separated they no longer can produce a normal nutritional effect on the body. According to this theory, an overdose of any one vitamin, as it occurs with separated out or synthetic vitamins, can be hazardous to the body. Complete vitamins, with all of their parts and necessary cofactors are often termed "whole food vitamins", since they are derived entirely from whole foods.

Vitamin C is Not Simply Ascorbic Acid
An excellent example of the difference between whole food and synthetic supplements, is vitamin C. The majority of books and magazines on the subject of nutrition refer to vitamin C as ascorbic acid. These terms are used interchangeably. However, vitamin C is not simply ascorbic acid. Ascorbic acid is the outer skin of vitamin C, much like the skin of an orange. Vitamin C also contains bioflavonoid complexes, tyrosinase, and several other factors. What do you get if you purchase a synthesized bottle of vitamin C? You are buying ascorbic acid, a small part of vitamin C, manufactured from super-refined corn sugar. Ascorbic acid does have strong effects on the body but is more of a drug than a nutrient. Because your body needs all parts of a vitamin to function, it will leech the other necessary cofactors from itself in order to use the ascorbic acid. This puts a lot of extra stress on your body, according to Dennis Nelson, in his book, Maximizing Nutrition.

Another example of whole food versus synthetic is vitamin B complex. Coal tar is the source of many synthetic B vitamins. Coal tar is not alive, and research confirms that it does not work as well in our bodies as natural sources of B vitamins, such as wheat germ.

What is Best For Our Children?
What is in the best interests for our children? According to many nutritionists, including Dr. Betsy Meshbesher, a nutritionist and owner of a national vitamin company, whole, organic foods in their natural state are best. Feeding your children organic fruits, vegetables, nuts, seeds and whole grains instead of potato chips, macaroni and cheese, granola bars and other highly processed foods will give them the nutrients they need to be healthy. What do you do if your child won't eat nearly enough whole foods? Then use whole food vitamins such as wheat germ oil, which provides a substantial amount of vitamin E complex as well as other vital nutrients. Or use rice bran syrup or nutritional yeast, which are excellent sources of the vitamin B complex.

How do we know if the vitamins are working? Let me relate my personal story, which illustrates how I learned the hard way about the efficacy of vitamins. One and a half years ago my daughter was born prematurely. By the time she was three months old she had chronic bronchitis, cradle cap, a persistent diaper rash, and very white porcelain skin. Though she was breastfeeding, it was apparent that she needed additional help. Liquid infant vitamin drops for several weeks did nothing to change her health condition. After thoroughly researching nutrition and consulting with several nutritionists, I started her on cod liver oil (an organic source), which is rich in vitamins A and D; rice bran syrup full of the vitamin Bs, iron, and other essential nutrients; wheat germ oil, rich in vitamin E; a liquid mineral supplement, and a whole food vitamin C tablet, which I crushed. By mixing my breast milk with tiny amounts of all of these nutrients, (as well as acidophilus-healthy bacteria that fight off bad bacteria in the body) she was able to fully recover within two to four weeks.

Her lungs completely cleared and she has not even had a cold in the past year. She has never again had a rash on her bottom. Her cradle cap rapidly disappeared, replaced with beautiful shiny red hair. Her skin changed from white porcelain to beautiful creamy pink. She looks healthier and she is healthier.

In summary, it is best to feed your children the healthiest foods possible because food is the best medicine. However, if your child does not eat well or has a health condition that is not resolving, try whole food concentrates. Skip the funny cartoon vitamins that look and taste like candy. They may actually be harming instead of helping your kids.

Slimmers try out green tea study on 2007
Scientists at the University of Nottingham are trying to find out if drinking green tea can aid weight loss.
Researchers are recruiting 220 volunteers as part of a 12 week study which will look at how flavanols in the tea affect fat tissue.
Half of the group will drink a cup of green tea twice a day, while the others will be given a placebo drink.
Those taking part will be aged 18 to 55, healthy, but slightly overweight and will be examined regularly.

Ancient discovery

Professor Ian Macdonald who is leading the research programme, said: "We are not giving our volunteers a diet, although dietary advice can be provided at the end of the 12 week period.
"We want to see if green tea affects the amount of body fat someone has, and in particular whether it affects the fat around their waist."
Results of the experiment are expected to be released in 2008.
The tea, discovered in China nearly 5,000 years ago, has long been thought to have health benefits.

“Tea is high in antioxidants which have many health benefits, including reducing the risk of cancer,” Dickson said.

“A 2005 study linked the consumption of tea to a lower risk of ovarian cancer. Other benefits of drinking tea regularly include preventing blood clotting and lowering cholesterol level,” Dickson added.

Antioxidants are an important part of any diet.

“Antioxidants protect us from disease by binding harmful oxygen-containing molecules called free radicals and peroxides that otherwise could damage your DNA, cell membranes and other cell components,” Dickson added.

There are many different varieties of tea, all which are beneficial to the body.
“All tea - green tea, oolong tea, and black tea - is good for us. Green tea is high in epigallocatechin gallate (EGCg) which are highly effective antioxidants,” Dickson said.

“Black tea and oolong tea have less EGCg than green tea, but they have higher levels of theaflavins and thearubigens compounds which have been found to as effective antioxidants as EGCg, “ Dickson added.

Organic Tea
Organic tea offers a chemical free alternative for tea drinkers.

“Organic tea is free from chemical residues and their potential health risks. Organic tea also tastes better,” Dickson said.

However, there are some that should abstain from tea.

“Tea has caffeine which can cause insomnia or irritableness if too much is consumed. Children and pregnant women should restrict their consumption of caffeine,” Dickson said.

Some students drink tea on a regular basis.

“I drink tea a lot. My mom buys it for me at home and I know it is good for me,” Emily Miller, senior public relations major at Illinois State University, said.

“Kwao Krua” inThailand is Pueraria mirifica

Pueraria mirifica is Thailand’s endemic species found mainly in the northern and western part of Thailand and has local name as “White Kwao Krua” or “Red Kwao Krua” or “Kwao Krua”. The Thai vine herbal plant is grown in association with the moderate-size trees ranking from timber wood to bamboo in the deciduous rain forest. The enlarge underground tuber accumulate “phytoestrogens” comprising isoflavone. The compounds that make Pueraria mirifica different from any other phytoestrogen- containing plants in the Family Leguminosae are Miroestrol and Deoxymiroestrol, which possess highest estrogenic activity among the known phytoestrogens due to structural similarity to estradiol.
Miroestrol was actually the first compound isolated from this plant by a group of German chemists in 1940, but the plant had been mistakenly reported then as Butea superba. It was later on classified as a new plant called Pueraria mirifica Airy Shaw et Suvatabhandu. The isolation and identification of deoxymiroestrol from the root of Pueraria mirifica has just been reported in the February 2000 issue of the Journal of Natural Products. The authors proposed that since deoxymiroestrol is easily oxidized to miroestrol, deoxymiroestrol, not the previously reported miroestrol, is more likely to be the actual chemical constituent of Pueraria mirifica. However, it is very likely that the two phytoestrogens coexist in the root of this plant. AS shown below, the chemical structures of the two compounds are very similar to that of estradiol, the main human estrogen.

In addition to miroestrol and deoxymiroestrol, Pueraria mirifica also contains other chemicals that belong to isoflavone and coumestran groups of phytoestrogens, e.g., Genistein, Daidzein, Daidzin, Genistin, and Coumestrol that are usually found in soybeans.
